[Yes/No] "emerge" should not try to install mimedefang BEFORE postfix. Since it tries to emerge mimedefang first, the configure phase of this package will fail because it will complain it can't find the sendmail binary (provided by postfix). The mimedefang ebuild may not correctly depend on postfix/sendmail. Also take a look at forum post at http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7587712.html#7587712

Lots of packages provide the sendmail binary. 2) Please attach the entire mimedefang build log to this bug report. > The mimedefang ebuild may not correctly depend on postfix/sendmail. That's obvious. It's doubtful and indeed quite fishy that mimedefang would /require/ a sendmail binary. It probably just checks whether it's there (which shouldn't be fatal). Please address the two points above.

It's doubtful and indeed quite fishy that mimedefang would > /require/ a sendmail binary. It probably just checks whether it's there > (which shouldn't be fatal). Please address the two points above. Unfortunately I had to move on with the installation and emerged postfix first and then emerged the rest of the packages, including mimedefang. Therefore I can't currently post the mimedefang build log but I do recall reading it and noticing an "econf failure" right after mimedefang's configure script reported that no sendmail binary was found on the system. That failure aborted the installation of mimedefang. I'm planning on reinstalling from scratch another server next week so I can post the log then. As an alternative I could unmerge postfix and mimedefang and try to emerge them together and send the log if it fails again. Will try that tomorrow.
You should save build logs when you intend to file bug reports.
(In reply to Jeroen Roovers from comment #4) > You should save build logs when you intend to file bug reports. Right. My mistake. Now I can't reproduce the original problem (ie. "emerge postfix mimedefang") but I can reproduce part of it. If I unmerge both postfix and mimedefang and then emerge mimedefang alone then I get the same econf fatal error. As you can see below the configure script fails if it doesn't find the 'sendmail' program. Hence emerge aborts. Shouldn't the mimedefang ebuild *require* a virtual package that provides 'sendmail'? # cat /var/tmp/portage/mail-filter/mimedefang-2.75/temp/build.log * Package: mail-filter/mimedefang-2.75 * Repository: gentoo * Maintainer: net-mail@gentoo.org * USE: abi_x86_32 clamav elibc_glibc kernel_linux poll userland_GNU x86 * FEATURES: nostrip preserve-libs sandbox userpriv usersandbox >>> Unpacking source... >>> Unpacking mimedefang-2.75.tar.gz to /var/tmp/portage/mail-filter/mimedefang-2.75/work >>> Source unpacked in /var/tmp/portage/mail-filter/mimedefang-2.75/work >>> Preparing source in /var/tmp/portage/mail-filter/mimedefang-2.75/work/mimedefang-2.75 ... * Applying mimedefang-2.72-ldflags.patch ...
