Default font color is black. Selection color in Abiword and Evince also forced to black (for Evince test — seems to be independent from real backgroung color, i.e. selection color is black not only for white background). So, selected text (black font on black background) becames unreadable. In other tested gtk applications (Firefox/Thunderbird, LO Writer, mousepad/leafpad, XFce Terminal) I don't see this issue. I've seen similiar (for Evince) bug in Debian bug tracker https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=685465 There it's marked as fixed. But I see no answer on question "How?". I cannot reproduce this. From what desktop are you running them?
(In reply to Pacho Ramos from comment #1) > I cannot reproduce this. From what desktop are you running them? I run them from current stable XFce (4.10).
I am now with evince 3.12 and I still can't reproduce when running from icewm. Please provide a screenshot
Created attachment 378000 [details] selection view for evince 3.10.3 (In reply to Pacho Ramos from comment #3) > Please provide a screenshot For now I check evince 3.10.3. On attached image two evince windows with the same file opened. On the top one one text string is selected.
Could you report this to upstream -> bugzilla.gnome.org I think it's a bug in gtk+: it provides a really minimal fallback theme that has this problem
(In reply to Pacho Ramos from comment #5) > Could you report this to upstream -> bugzilla.gnome.org Bug was reported upstream, link inserted in See Also field. > I think it's a bug in gtk+: it provides a really minimal fallback theme that > has this problem On my system this library is built with the following USEs: $ equery u x11-libs/gtk+:3 [ Legend : U - final flag setting for installation] [ : I - package is installed with flag ] [ Colors : set, unset ] * Found these USE flags for x11-libs/gtk+-3.10.8: U I + + X : Add support for X11 - - colord : Use x11-misc/colord for color management in printing + + cups : Add support for CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) - - debug : Enable extra debug codepaths, like asserts and extra output. If you want to get meaningful backtraces see http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/qa/backtraces.xml - - examples : Install examples, usually source code + + introspection : Add support for GObject based introspection - - test : Workaround to pull in packages needed to run with FEATURES=test. Portage-2.1.2 handles this internally, so don't set it in make.conf/package.use anymore - - vim-syntax : Pulls in related vim syntax scripts - - wayland : Enable dev-libs/wayland backend - - xinerama : Add support for the xinerama X11 extension, which is mandatory if you work in multiple monitors setup Have you any ideas/experience about gathering useful debug info? Is simple strace well enough, or it's better to see some specific log?
I can't remember how this exactly worked, but maybe installing x11-themes/gnome-themes-standard will "work" as Adwaita will be used instead of the (ugly) fallback theme
(In reply to Pacho Ramos from comment #7) > maybe installing > x11-themes/gnome-themes-standard will "work" as Adwaita will be used instead > of the (ugly) fallback theme Thank you! Installation of x11-themes/gnome-themes-standard package with switching to new theme changed nothing. Or I've missed something and to take effect more deep restart is needed? One more related note: on an Ubuntu Linux (not my workstation, so I don't know neither Ubuntu release, nor evince version) I've don't seen this issue (i.e. selected text in evince stays readable).

Can you attach another screenshot? I guess a different theme is being used there
Created attachment 379012 [details] Correct view for evince (In reply to Pacho Ramos from comment #9) > Can you attach another screenshot? yeah, that is a different theme... but I don't remember what was needed to get that :S
Anyway, the upstream gtk+ fallback theme is broken... but the bug you reported is wrongly assigned to evince people... it should be reassigned to gtk+ maintainers
(In reply to Pacho Ramos from comment #11) > yeah, that is a different theme... but I don't remember what was needed to > get that :S What theme you use (with which you've failed to reproduce this issue)? I want to try it to verify first part of issue: what is broken (missed?) making fall-back to gtk+ default theme (which is also broken).
Adwaita theme (the default gnome one)
(In reply to Pacho Ramos from comment #14) > Adwaita theme (the default gnome one) Thank you! Excuse me, I was a little bit mistaken talking about icon theme instead of common one. My current theme is Xfce-dawn. Switching to Adwaita fixes this issue. And Adwaita is the only theme, where I don't see it. I have installed the following icon packages: $ eix -I --only-names -C x11-themes x11-themes/faenza-icon-theme x11-themes/gnome-icon-theme x11-themes/gnome-icon-theme-symbolic x11-themes/gnome-themes-standard x11-themes/gtk-engines-xfce x11-themes/hicolor-icon-theme x11-themes/slim-themes x11-themes/faience-icon-theme Also for test was installed, find providing issue and uninstalled x11-themes/murrine-themes. x11-themes/faience-icon-theme (used on the second, screenshot without this bug issue — in that case user's manual installation) was installed for test from local overlay, looks differently from OK example. So, I expect something wrong in non-gnome gtk themes ebuilds (functions/eclasses?). P.S. According comment in gnome bugzilla, gtk+ upstream plans to change fall-back theme to Adwaita.
Will need to wait for gtk+ >= 3.13.3 to get adwaita theme as default from upstream :/
Looked into this quickly today and found an explanation and workaround here: https://code.google.com/p/zoncolor/issues/detail?id=1 Fixes the issue with 3.12.2 here.
We have now 3.14 in the tree
