Disclaimer: I am not certain exactly where this problem lies. I am unable to recompile media-video/vlc-2.0.7. The build appears to die with link and include problems realted to Freetype and svg, but there are many errors reported and I'm not sure where exactly the problem lies. Installed freetype is media-libs/freetype-2.5.3. Installed SVG lib is gnome-base/librsvg-2.40.1-r1. And the answer is yes, current unstable vlc resolves both this problem and the problem that vlc was causing X11 to crash hard, which I now presume to have been a library mismatch issue. Solution confirmed.
It still needs to be stabilized; other than that, I plan to set up an upper limit on the dependency in the older ebuilds, but I'll need to check them first.

Since vlc-2.1.x is broken in an essential way (cf. Bug 523366) i would like to be able to continue to use vlc 2.0.9. vlc 2.0.9 can be forcibly compiled against media-libs/freetype-2.5.3 when either /usr/include/freetype2 is soft-linked to freetype or the respective #include statements are patched. Due to the dependency on <media-libs/freetype-2.5.3 (which is wrong, IMnsHO, and the reason i issued Bug 523372), portage is quite unhappy with the installation, afterwards.
