Description Richard Yao (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-02-06 01:11:24 UTC
Paul Nienaber at the University of Victoria would like his employer to donate some excessed equipment to me for use in ZFS development. The equipment would run OmniOS for the primary purpose of providing a development environment for code sharing between our Linux ZFS packaging and Illumos as part of Open ZFS.

Paul would like to list the Gentoo Foundation as the recipient on their paperwork should it be necessary to fulfill their internal requirements. Is this okay?
Comment 1 David Abbott (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-02-06 01:22:33 UTC
Its Fine by me, all we ask is if you ever leave that the hardware goes to another Gentoo developer that wants it.
Comment 2 Richard Yao (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-02-06 18:48:13 UTC
I just realized that Paul's email address in the tracker is different than the one he uses to correspond with me. I just added him on CC.

Paul would like the hardware to be held in trust for the OpenZFS Foundation in the event that it is created and I stop doing ZFS stuff. David, is that okay with you?
Comment 3 P Nienaber 2014-02-06 19:01:32 UTC
As Richard said, we would prefer if the hardware was earmarked for OpenZFS and/or ZoL development, to be passed on to a foundation for either at such time as one actually exists. Our interest is particularly in the progress of the latter, but it would seem that it is more likely that there will be an OpenZFS Foundation in the near term than a ZFS On Linux foundation.

Fine by me, put together a motion and I can add it to the next Gentoo Foundation Trustee meeting's agenda [1].

This way we will have a record of it. Thanks Paul and Richard!
Comment 5 P Nienaber 2014-02-07 18:46:55 UTC
If the meeting is the record if this going on, is it still possibly OK to ship out before then? Right now there is a large, heavy box sitting in our lobby waiting to be mailed off, and it would be really nice if I can just go ahead and send it once the requisite # of trustees have "verbally" confirmed it's a go. Thanks in advance.

We, the baord, can vote here, and announce the results at the next meeting, for the record. Assuming a positive vote, feel free to ship immediately following.

Aye from me.

This has been approved at the trustees March 2014 meeting. Please let us know what we need to do to finalize this donation.

Thanks for supporting Gentoo!

Of course I meant the February meeting, which happened yesterday.

Any update on this?

The donation was done without the need to involve the foundation.
