Old livecd specs used to unmerge gcc [1], but this was changed when adding software speech to the install cds [2]. Since portage now has preserve-libs default-on, that should ensure that any consumers of gcc libs like libstdc++ keep working. In my preliminary tests, I find no breakage and this unmerge of gcc reduces the size of the minimal iso by around 32MB. I've added the support to catalyst to do this[1][2]. I've also took care of the config in skimmer to enable the use of preserve-libs[3]. So perhaps it's time I apply the change to the admin-cd[4] to the install-cd as well. This change is in several of the latest isos and looks good, thanks, closing
