Description Steve Garcia 2013-10-14 20:50:31 UTC
Cups 1.6.2 allows you to install the stacker/stapler attachment to your printer, but it has removed any ability to actually use it.

Version 1.5.3 included a "Finishing" option if your printer had the appropriate hardware installed. That option is missing in 1.6.x.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1."Upgrade" from cups 1.5.3 to 1.6.2
2.Install HP 500-sheet stapler/stacker

Actual Results:
Hand staple all your documents.

Expected Results:
A "Finishing" tab should show up on the print dialog box. Under this tab you can choose whether to staple and how to orient the staples.

It worked fine in 1.5.3

Reverting to 1.5.3 no longer seems to be an option, since the ebuild seems to have been gutted, only supporting ~m68k.

Please do not add arches to a bug, they are for stabilization purposes.
Comment 3 Andreas K. Hüttel archtester gentoo-dev 2013-10-21 22:45:54 UTC
Please try 1.6.4 and report back, many such small details have been fixed there.

(1.5 is de-keyworded because of a security issue.)
Comment 4 Steve Garcia 2013-10-22 15:50:26 UTC
Sorry, no dice. 1.6.4 still does not have a finishing tab, and the staple property doesn't seem to be present in any other tab.
Comment 5 Timo Gurr (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-10-22 16:15:07 UTC
I'm using CUPS 1.6.4 and it offers me a finisher option. With a different printer though, but usually CUPS reads the options from the provided ppd files. Did you check if the used ppd actually offers/mentions the option anywhere?

Example from the ppd of the printer here:

And the same for staple:
