Description Helmut Jarausch 2013-10-11 11:41:31 UTC
Hi,
emerging kde-base/kde-meta-4.11.2 seems to run
update-mime-database /usr/share/mime
for each of its dependencies which is here more than 200 times.

This is taking most of the wall-clock time when emerging a new version
of kde.

Is this really necessary?

Thanks for looking into it,
Helmut

Same happen here. Such thing let update extremely slow. Is this really necessary?

Maybe portage team will know more.
Comment 3 Michael Palimaka (kensington) gentoo-dev 2013-10-13 12:45:22 UTC
Every KDE package unconditionally runs that to ensure update-mime-database via fdo-mime eclass, to ensure the MIME database is up-to-date. In order to do this on a per-package basis, we would need to inspect over 500 packages.

The slowness issue is caused by >=x11-misc/shared-mime-info-1.2 and is being tracked in bug #487504.

So we can't fix the bug. The issue of the slow mime database update in =x11-misc/shared-mime-info-1.2 can be fixed by re-emerging the package bug #487504. Maybe package maintainer will do a revbump to force the rebuild.
