It compiles fine when building the same target again via crossdev.

I can confirm this.
Comment 4 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2013-10-12 19:24:03 UTC
wonder if it's a parallel build issue. try using MAKEOPTS=-j1.
Comment 5 Timo Rothenpieler 2013-10-12 19:32:17 UTC
Crossdev seems to build this in two steps, one for the headers, one for everything else.

correct, but the 'everything else' includes both headers and lib, so there must be a problem with the lib compile and expect headers to be pre-installed in this mode, I am checking this out.

OK, as far as I can see it is actually by-design... they intentionally use the installed headers to compile the crt in any case.

There is --with-sysroot= parameter, but it does not help if all is build in one pass, as the header tree layout does not match the installation layout.

I will post a question upstream...
Comment 8 Alon Bar-Lev (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-10-12 19:59:26 UTC
vapier... question... shouldn't we enforce gcc rebuilt with new headers for it to properly work with the new crt?

how does glibc cope with this scenario?
Comment 9 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2013-10-12 20:20:48 UTC
(In reply to Alon Bar-Lev from comment #8)

mmm, no, that shouldn't be the case. crt objects are supposed to have a stable ABI. the crt<->libc ABI in glibc/uclibc/every-other-C-library is very stable -- it makes a specific call to the shared lib at runtime and passes it the state (like argc/argv). then the shared lib is allowed to change things as it needs.

I thought that the API is the stable, the ABI is stable by luck...

I believe that some builtin macros may be changed in a way that gcc will be broken, as modifying only the crt will not change the macros that were compiled within gcc.
Comment 11 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2013-10-12 21:25:42 UTC
(In reply to Alon Bar-Lev from comment #10)

the crt is supposed to be very tiny code. only enough to bootstrap the initial C runtime env (like the stack, and locate argc/argv/environ). the rest gets passed to the C library for finished processing before calling the user's main.

With MAKEOPTS=-j1 it didn't go as far. See bug #487822 for details.

Hi vapier,

This is a simple workaround I tried to apply.

The problem is that for some reason, although it compiles, it produces warnings that do not exist when the files are installed into the original sysroot.

I tried to determine why, and it is not trivial.

Still waiting for upstream response regarding that.
