with libftdi-1.0 there's no libftdi.pc (ther's libftdil.pc and libftdippl.pc), I guess that's why it is not finding ftdi.h.
if I add `pkgconfig libftdi --cflags` or simply  '-I /usr/include/libftdi'

 x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I.  -DCONFIG_DIR=\"/etc\" `pkg-config libftdi1 --cflags`  -Wall -Wno-pointer-sign -march=native -O2 -pipe -c -o libavrdude_a-avrftdi.o `test -f 'avrftdi.c' || echo './'`avrftdi.c

with 0.20 it just builds as it should
may be avdrdude should depend on <=libftdi-0.20
Comment 5 Roc Vallès 2013-06-07 23:40:35 UTC
There seems to be a 6.0 rc:
http://download.savannah.gnu.org/releases/avrdude/avrdude-6.0rc1.tar.gz

It might work well with libftdi 1.0
Comment 6 Dale Lukas Peterson 2013-09-11 22:12:32 UTC
I can confirm I am hitting this bug as well with avrdude-5.11.1 and libftdi-1.0:

avrftdi.c:44:18: fatal error: ftdi.h: No such file or directory

ftdi.h is located in /usr/include/libftdi1, rather than /usr/include, so I guess it is not located by default.
Comment 7 Konstantin B 2013-10-14 22:51:44 UTC
I also hit this bug, but installing http://download.savannah.gnu.org/releases/avrdude/avrdude-6.0.1.tar.gz with ftdi-1.0 with the avrdude-5.11.1 ebuild (unchanged) works fine, no errors.
Comment 8 Alexis Ballier gentoo-dev 2015-02-09 10:27:22 UTC
seems fixed with avrdude-6.1
