I configured gdm als display manager and it comes up, presents its wonderful 
yellow flower and asks for a login, and after that for a password. gdm does 
not set up a session, but returns immediately back to the login screen. I 
tried several users and session types, even kde, all the same. kdm and xdm 
work fine. In forums.gentoo.org,german at least one other user has the same 
problem. installed version is gdm-2.4.0.0

that should have been fixed in an earlier revision.
Try emerge -u gdm and tell us if it's still existing

Yes this should be fixed with the latest gdm version...
Please reopen this bug if you are still experiencing that 
problem.
