Description Gustavo Felisberto (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-07-03 12:58:38 UTC
I did a emerge net-www/apache dev-lang/php net-www/mod_ssl and followd all
the instructions on 	http://www.gentoo.org/doc/desktop.html#doc_chap7.
If i start it with "start-stop-daemon --quiet --start --startas
/usr/sbin/apache --pidfile /var/run/apache.pid -- ${APACHE_OPTS}" i can see
apache running. If i start with /etc/init.d/apache start it gives an ok
message but does not start. I dont see nothing wrong in the logs. Also if i
start with the big line i dont have php or https.
I am having this problem in Gentoo Linux PPC, dont know if is arch specifiq

Okay, I've confirmed it. It's doing the same thing for me.

* Logs show nothing out of the ordinary doing an /etc/init.d/apache start but
the server does not start with PHP enabled.
* Starting using "apachectl start"aorks.

I'll play with it some more and hopefully have a fix by the end of the day.

I am wondering if this is some issue with some of our recent apache changes, can
you please do the following,
emerge -C apache
then remove the apache user and group from /etc/passwd and /etc/group
emerge /usr/portage/net-www/apache/apace-1.3.26-r4.ebuild
I believe that will actually take care of you, if not, then it is still a bug :)
Comment 3 Gustavo Felisberto (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-07-04 17:01:20 UTC
I did as Brandon suggested. Just after the emerge started i got this:
tching file src/support/httpd.exp
patching file src/ApacheCore.def
>>> Source unpacked.
 * DATA_DIR is null! Using defaults.
  * You probably want to check /etc/passwd
   * Using /home/httpd as the default data directory.
    * >>> using /etc/apache/apache-builtin-mods for builtins...
The first two * where red.
After the ebuild ended the problem was still hapening.
Comment 4 Owen Stampflee (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-09-25 11:57:51 UTC
I'm wondering if any progress has been made? Do the latest Apache revisions work
as intended?
Comment 5 Gustavo Felisberto (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-09-29 19:28:37 UTC
yes. All is NOT working as expected. Also I had some problems with the upgrade
to 1.4. So i am waiting for the 1.4 to come out and then will do a new install.
So probably a goos idea to close the bug.

try out apache-1.3.27 ...
Comment 7 Gustavo Felisberto (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-10-10 10:13:43 UTC
I had to remove gentoo from the box. Probably a good idea to remove this bug....
