Please disable -ggdb in C{,XX}FLAGS. https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=91154 This is a limitation of binutils where archive files (.a) cannot be bigger than 4GB.
IIRC -ggdb is safe flag so it should be filtered if it causing problems (or path from linked bug applied).
For reference, this also applies to the 1.8.2 and 1.8.3 webkit-gtk ebuilds in portage. With -g in the flags they also now generate (at least on amd64) ar(5)chives greater than 2³² octets. 1.8.1 was the last which didn’t do that for me. Of course, the real bugs are upstream’s insistence on creating a static library even when only installing share objects, and the lack of >4G support in the ar(5) symbol tables. RH’s binutils, at least, includes support for larger ar(5)chives. Cf: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=835957#c19 as well as the followup comment.

This hasn't been fixed as of =binutils-2.23.1, I haven't tried >=binutils-2.23.51.0.1 since they're not even ~ on any arches. Perhaps this should have a dependency on the masked binutils? Otherwise every update this will chunter for half an hour before failing for a known reason...

I can confirm that it is working with >=binutils-2.23.51.
I tried the masked package of binutils, but no joy -- still the file truncated error. This was with the latestwebkit-gtk 1.10.1-r300.
(In reply to comment #8) > I tried the masked package of binutils, but no joy -- still the file > truncated error. This was with the latestwebkit-gtk 1.10.1-r300. Have you tried with CFLAGS+="-Wa,--compress-debug-sections"?
Bumped into this one as well, with -ggdb set.
(In reply to comment #10) > Bumped into this one as well, with -ggdb set. I've set CFLAG -g0 and it's built fine.
Until our binutils is completely fixed, I suppose we will have to call "replace-flags -ggdb -g" in the ebuild. + 01 Jan 2013; Alexandre Rostovtsev <tetromino@gentoo.org> + webkit-gtk-1.10.2-r300.ebuild: + Raise build space requirements for webkit with debugging flags to 18GB (bug + #417307, thanks to Doug Goldstein). Replace -ggdb with -g until binutils is + fixed (bug #432784, thanks to Maciej Piechotka and Priit Laes); users of + patched binutils can allow -ggdb usage by adding WEBKIT_GTK_GGDB=yes to + make.conf
Per upstream report, we should be able to drop the filtering in latest version
Filtering dropped in 2.6.x that should finally fix this
