Description Martin Mokrejš 2012-01-25 10:50:56 UTC
I booted the LiveDVD on an old hardware and it is really slow (took half an hour to get KDM up). Choosing xfce over kde is of course gaining some speed and responsiveness but fvwm2 is even faster.

We have openbox, fluxbox and awesome window manager. XFCE is a Desktop Environment and shouldn't be used on slow hardware. W.R.T FVWM this won't work out the box for everyone and we need a custom dynamic theme to handle the various resolutions that will come across. It's something that I've been meaning to work on for years but didn't have time but now that you mention it, I should get the ball rolling on this.

Thanks for reporting this but it will be marked as work in progress. Now go boot into fluxbox or awesome wm :D

Thanks. Would it be possible to place in round brackets some short comments for all those option so they would be shown in that kdm listing? And would the options be sorted most CPU/IO/memory hungry first while those less hungry at the bottom?

Second thought. From the running kernel one can using scripts get current RAM size, swap size, CPU speed. Why not dynamically hiding or changing the above proposed description text in case the hardware is too weak? At least giving users a hint not to try KDE on such a crap. ;)

Awesome was too hardcore for me (using/administering UNIX only since 1996). ;)
Fluxbox is usable for me, thanks, especially as I just added temporarily 1GB of RAM so have 1.5GB now in total.
