Description Harris Landgarten 2011-10-11 20:22:35 UTC
Ever since pulseaudio-1.0 I have been experiencing several crashes and restarts a day. The logs show:

[alsa-sink] memblockq.c: Assertion '!bq->blocks || (bq->write_index + (int64_t)chunk.length <= bq->blocks->index)' failed at pulsecore/memblockq.c:408, function pa_memblockq_push(). Aborting.

This is the error that is causing the restart

Reproducible: Always

Would it be possible for you to;

1. Run pulseaudio -vvvv >& some_log_file until something crashes, and the put the log up here?

2. Bonus points if you could run pulseaudio under gdb as well and provide a backtrace

Also, what versions of the kernel and alsa-lib are you running?
Comment 4 Harris Landgarten 2011-10-17 15:44:21 UTC
when I tried attaching gdb to the pulseaudio pid it disrupted sound. During the workday I am using broadcasting a webex session from a windows vm under vmware-workstation and listening to a constant stream from an rdesktop session using local sound. There is also occasional sound from the gentoo host. The pulse aborts happen during heavy activity but also sometimes happen overnight when nothing special is going on.

It is all seem to be involving the alsa-sink

This is my .asoundrc if it helps

pcm.!default {
    type pulse
}

ctl.!default {
    type pulse
}
Comment 5 Harris Landgarten 2011-10-17 15:48:14 UTC
Note the .asoundrc is redirecting rdesktop to pulse because it is using alsa and has no direct pulse support. This could be important
Comment 6 Arun Raghavan (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-10-20 16:23:13 UTC
The pulseaudio verbose output might help, though. Even with the ALSA emulation, things should work reasonably smoothly.
Comment 7 Harris Landgarten 2011-10-24 17:35:38 UTC
Have not had a crash yet with 1.1.0

If I don't see one in the next day or two we can consider this bug fixed.
