Description faust tanasescu (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-06-13 20:33:02 UTC
hello

I have thought of 2 new ways of installing gentoo. Actually one of them i
being used currently by some power users, while the second one is more
delicate.

chrooted environment
=====================

This is the way I ahve installed gentoo on my redhat 7.3 system. simply
download stage1 tarball, tar -xvjpf stage1.foo , chroot inside and start
bootstraping, emerging etc.

advantages: no repatritioning, networking is already thre, so is sound, X
can be vconfigured in a milisecond cby copying old XFree86 ie, PLUS ou have
a backup system in base of needs, not to mention this gentoo installation
can itself be backed up ery easily and replicated acros a network.

downsides: erm... I don't know if I can think of any downside... It's not
perfect... but erm... it's hard to setup? maybe..

to a NFS disk.
==============

yep, like the name says it, just boot on he clinet machine your gentoo
thing, mount NFS folder from server, create a file on it, create a
filessytem and off you go ;)

advantages: no space is used on client's machine. Good when remote machine
has processing power while lacking space (you dont wanna erase that
beautiful XP, do you ;O ) good for testing gentoo., easy to replicate to
another machine. sue this baby with grub and you'll have diskless gentoo
babies ;)

downsides: you need a good network... like 10mbps at least IMO if you want
a real-time system.

Well that's about it folks. I'd be happy if someone would write this up
into Alternative install if not I can write it myself with a more detailed
procedure.

Thanks!

Is there a chance that you could put this into xml please, and possibly diff it
against the alt-build guide?

Is this bug still active?

i've a question about the chroot

did you mean install on an other partition ?
if not downside: many unused files on the gentoo partition.

There is a whole section "Installing Gentoo from an existing Linux distribution"
in the alternative installs guide.

- "I can write it myself with a more detailed procedure."
- (2002-10-04) "Is there a chance that you could put this into xml please, and
possibly diff it against the alt-build guide?"

After 2 mohths still nothing. I think bug is too old.
