Description Eric "me262" Mason 2011-03-12 07:48:36 UTC
I'm attempting to run vmware-workstation 6.5.5 after upgrading to gentoo testing (~x86). from the command line, it spits out the module information, and quits without any peep about what's wrong. vmware-player brings up a list of vms, but once one is launched, it quits in the same manner.

installed: vmware-workstation 6.5.5, vmware-modules-1.0.0.25-r3

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. install vmware-workstation
2. upgrade to gentoo-testing ~x86
3. attempt to run workstation or player.
Actual Results:
Actual: vmware-workstation does not launch, vmware-player after hitting "play" on a vm, does not launch.

Expected Results:
Expected: successful launch of vmware-workstation

Portage 2.1.9.42 (default/linux/x86/10.0, gcc-4.5.2, glibc-2.13-r1, 2.6.37-ck i686)

Did you run config (emerge --config vmware-workstation)?
Is vmware service started?
Are vm modules loaded?
What are in the logs?

Thanks.

> Did you run config (emerge --config vmware-workstation)?
yes. I've even tried doing emerge -C --noconfmem vmware-workstation && emerge --noconfmem vmware-workstation && emerge --config vmware-workstation && /etc/init.d/vmware start

> Is vmware service started?
yes.

> Are vm modules loaded?
yes

> What are in the logs?

Take a look at bug 347628

> 2. upgrade to gentoo-testing ~x86
have you tried:
emerge -DuvNa @world
followed by
revdep-rebuild -- -j3

Yeah, I can't even get that far. I have no GUI to launch a VM from.

No, I did "emerge -ave system && emerge -ave world && emerge -ave world"
I'll try this way and see how it goes.
Comment 5 Eric "me262" Mason 2011-03-22 04:03:02 UTC
The system has updated for vmware-modules-1.0.0.25-r4. I'm emerging those first.
Comment 6 Eric "me262" Mason 2011-03-22 05:25:51 UTC
Same thing happens under vmware-modules 1.0.0.25-r4.
Comment 7 Eric "me262" Mason 2011-03-22 05:37:49 UTC
Through cleaning my .vmware folder, I can now pinpoint where in execution it's going wrong. It's printing out the list of modules, asking for the license agreement, then crashing after "I Accept".
Comment 8 Andrew Church 2011-07-24 01:15:53 UTC
I ran into the same problem, and found two separate causes of memory access errors:

- Running with libview-0.6.6 causes a in the callback from the "OK" button in the EULA window. Downgrading to libview-0.6.2 fixed this problem.

- Using VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=force caused a segfault immediately after the window appeared. Leaving VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK undefined allowed the program to start up normally, though with the known bug (Gentoo bug 291297) of mouse misbehavior outside the prior window bounds when "Autofit Window" is active.

Backtrace from the second problem, for reference:

Comment 9 Andrew Church 2011-07-24 01:21:27 UTC
The workaround from bug 360803 (cp /usr/lib/libxml2.so.2 /opt/vmware/workstation/lib/vmware/lib/libxml2.so.2/) seems to resolve the second segfault even with VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=force set.
