Hardened sources 2.6.28-r9 is very old now and it only being kept for legacy reasons. I am planning to remove it from the tree when the next stable set of .32 and .36 (or.37) are released.

I strongly recommend that you upgrade.

It happened at last year and I solve the problem by disabling kernel option CONFIG_PAX_SEGMEXEC

old bugs (not fixed) sometimes reproduce in new versions ;-)

Please state which new versions (.32 and later), give your kernel .config file, and the oops. I'm sorry, but I'm not going to look at .28
Comment 13 PaX Team 2011-01-14 23:37:57 UTC
as blueness said, please reproduce this on something newer (.32+) as many bugs/issues have been fixed since .28.

I didn't request fix it. I solve the problem by disable kernel option CONFIG_PAX_SEGMEXEC. I just report about it. :-)

.config
CONFIG_PAX_NOEXEC=y
CONFIG_PAX_PAGEEXEC=y
# CONFIG_PAX_SEGMEXEC is not set

I also confirm replacing SEGMEXEC with PAGEEXEC solve this issue.
Comment 20 Víctor Ostorga (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-06-14 16:35:21 UTC
I can confirm this bug happening with sys-kernel/hardened-sources-2.6.36-r6 . I experienced it when I re-emerged sys-devel/gcc-4.3.4.

In the other hand, I can't reproduce it with 2.6.38-hardened-r6

I can reproduce it with linux-2.6.39-hardened-r8  CONFIG_PAX_SEGMEXEC=y

on 3.0.4 too? also, can you give me a reliable way to reproduce it?

I can reproduce it in 3.0.4 doing emerge --oneshot sys-devel/gcc:4.3 sys-devel/gcc:4.4 sys-devel/gcc:4.5 inside a chroot. It brings up the bug when emerging gcc:4.5

vmstat doesn't show any unusual behaviour.
The system doesn't hangs up, however I need to reboot to keep doing emerge stuff

This is my emerge --info, if you need further info just tell me

this is an ancient bug. can you reopen if this is still an issue on recent kernels.
