Description brad 2010-07-30 02:30:48 UTC
Installed vmware server and the console. Found out quickly that the console was the only access to the vmware machines since vmware does not support firefox 3.6 so tried the console.
Unable to connect to the remote host: 501 Global command GLOBAL server-vmdb to non-host agent targets not supported.
is the error.
I have tried to run the config script which runs error free and even different ports. One obscure google file on the error hints towards a c code and global variable issue.
This is your world, not mine my friends....

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.emerge --unmerge vmware-server vmware-console
2.emerge vmware-server vmware-console
3./opt/vmware/server/bin/vmware-config.pl

Expected Results:
see a virtual computer starting up!!!

Has this bug been over looked for some reason?

I daresay it's not that vmware doesn't support firefox. It's firefox that doesn't support xmlhttp (I'm not sure what it is exactly, but it's somehow connected to the ajax technology). You're seem to be a linux user, so opera works perfectly fine, you should try it.

Getting back to the topic. I can second the problem exists, and though I tried the windows client with the same result. I thought the version of the client differs from that of the server, and I downgraded it to 1*. I couldn't even connect either from linux or from windows client. It seems something's broken in VMWare server, and the community can't really help it.

taken from http://www.vmware.com/products/server/faqs.html :

"I am familiar with managing VMware Server using the VMware Server Console. Will I be able to manage VMware Server 2 with the same VMware Server 1.0.x Server Console?
The VI Web Access management interface in VMware Server 2 replaces the VMware Server Console in Server 1.0.x. The VI Web Access management interface provides a simple, flexible, intuitive and productive management experience for both local and remote management and monitoring."

In my words: VMware Server Console 1.x is not meant to access VMware Server 2.x. This is no bug, but intended by VMware.

vmware server was removed from the tree. Bug 354383.
