I just found a minor bug which must have been present in previous ebuild versions as well (or at least the more recent ones):
SlashEm seems to be one of those packages which must be built sequentially, not in parallel. (I got the error "Can't find asmodeus.lev" when building on my two-core CPU laptop.)

Of course the real solution is to patch the makefile, making SlashEm handle parallel builds by introducing proper dependencies, but while waiting for myself to create such a patch (or for someone else to do it, whichever happens first) I'm forced to set MAKEOPTS="-j2" instead of "-j3" when building.

Two questions:
1) Is there a way to filter out the MAKEOPTS flags in the ebuild?
2) Does anyone know how the "-jN" make option REALLY work? The make infopage says that it sets the number of possible parallel jobs to N, but why do I need three parallel jobs to make use of both my CPU cores - why isn't two parallel jobs enough to do that?
Comment 5 brent 2011-10-05 12:01:42 UTC
the ebuild, patches, etc. don't seem to work in my environment.

build log available upon request (it doesn't seem to be attaching at the moment). emerge --info is below. the same issue occurs with both gcc-4.4.4 and gcc-4.5.2

it should be noted, however, that version 0.0.8E0F1[0] found on slashem's development page[1] compiles and works fine. several errors, but none fatal.
might i suggest a hardmasked 0.0.8 version bump to open for testing, since 0.0.77x is.. well, ancient?

Not to object to your suggestion, but I thought I might add that the development version is as ancient as the stable one... they were both released the 30th of December 2006.

I don't remember the status of the features in the development version right now, but IMHO that version is quite unstable, telling from the crashes I've experienced.

ah, it seemed to be more stable on my architecture than 0.0.772

same age indeed. however, at least 0.0.8 has a ./configure and the like. plenty of warnings but no errors on compile.

would you like my build log for 0.0.773? have you compiled successfully on amd64 under gcc-4.5.2?

Sorry for not checking this thread and reading your post for almost a year. A kid and a job kind of got in the way :)
I have just updated the slashem ebuild with some stuff for libpng, please try it if you have the time. It worked for me on an amd64.
