Description Arthur Spitzer 2010-04-16 08:13:19 UTC
So I have the following situation using openbox on the one hand and lxde-base/lxsession on the other hand:
if I start my desktop with following entry in .xinitrc: "ck-launch-session openbox-session", everything is fine. In detail:
1) starting app-laptop/batti (which uses upower) makes dbus launch upower
2) starting pcmanfm2/nautilus (which use gfvs) makes dbus launch udisks, because gvfs uses udisks for external drives

On the other hand, if I start my desktop with one of the following: "[exec] ck-launch-session {lxsession,startlxde}", the results is:
1) batti makes dbus launch upower as before (fine!)
2) pcmanfm2/nautilus start, but don't see my external drives, because udisks is not launched

Btw. I observe the launches of udisks/upower with d-feet.

Hal is not installed on my system. I'm using:
gnome-base/gvfs-1.6.0
gnome-base/nautilus-2.26.4-r1
x11-misc/pcmanfm-0.9.3
sys-apps/udisks-1.0.0
sys-apps/dbus-1.2.24

I'm wondering why you don't start lxde with just exec startlxde in you ~/.xinitrc

Just did that, but it introduces another problem: without ck-launch-session I don't even get a ConsoleKit session. And without such a session I don't have the permission to restart/halt with ConsoleKit and to suspend/hibernate with UPower.
See bug #313803 on that issue.
The same happens when starting openbox-session without ck-launch-session.
This implies the need of startlxde to use ck-launch-session (but that's probably another bug).

The problem persists, that in an lxde session udisks is not started, while upower is.

It's normal behavior that you need to put 'ck-launch-session' to startup file like ~/.xinitrc yourself. It should be documented.

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xfce-config.xml says:

<quote>
Note: If you have ConsoleKit installed, your ~/.xinitrc should instead contain exec ck-launch-session startxfce4. Otherwise, some of your applications may stop working. You'll also need to add consolekit to the default runlevel by running the following command as root: rc-update add consolekit default.
</quote>

'exec ck-launch-session startlxde' in ~/.xinitrc ?

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/openbox.xml says:

<quote>
Note: If you experience problems with automounting, or if you use dbus and ConsoleKit, you may want to put 'exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session openbox-session' in your .xinitrc instead of the default mentioned above.
</quote>

'exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session startlxde' in ~/.xinitrc ?

Or if it's a authorization problem, then it's good idea to have also "polkit-gnome" or "lxpolkit" installed.

Then post output of 'ck-list-sessions' too, version information of consolekit, shadow, polkit, lxsession. Try with up to date system. Then reopen if the problem is still there.
