Description Dwight Tuinstra 2003-10-19 08:58:47 UTC
Gimp, gimp-print, and foomatic versions and flags:
net-print/foomatic-3.0.0
media-gfx/gimp-1.2.5 +python +nls +gnome +aalib +perl +doc +jpeg +png +tiff
media-gfx/gimp-print-4.2.5-r2 +nls +gtk +readline +cups +foomaticdb +ppds
net-print/hpijs-1.4.1 +cups +foomaticdb +ppds

Printer is HP 5550, connected via USB. Printing a test page via CUPS web
interface or via the Gnome Cups Manager will sometimes work, sometimes not. (It
appears that end-user attempts to diagnose or correct the problem just fubar the
situation more. Solutions proposed in the forums and the Gentoo Printing How-To
don't work.)

Attempting to print from Gimp results in blank pages being spit out continuously
until the job is killed. Small but significant exception to the blank pages
occur: In some cases a print job has a line or two or three at the top of one
page. Examples from some trials:
-----
GIMP/Gimp-Print 4.2.5 (24 Jan 2003)
                                   %%CreationDate: Sun [date snipped]
                                                                     %Cop
-----
%!PS-Adobe-3.0
              %%Creator: Print plug-in V4.3.21 - 24 Sep 2003 for GIMP/Gimp-Print
-----
From these it appears that either the PostScript is incorrect or the
transmission of PS information is being garbled and some control characters are
being dropped.

This occurs with either the gimp-print-ijs or the hpijs drivers selected, and
with the ppd field (File | Print | Printer Settings | Setup Printer | PPD File)
either blank or pointing to a ppd.

Ppds were created by:

foomatic-configure -s cups -p HP-DeskJet_5550 -c file:/dev/usb/lp0 -n
HP_5550_hpijs -d hpijs

and by the same except for gimp-print-ijs for the driver.

This also occurs with gimp-print-4.3.21, at least with the driver/ppd
combinations I tried.

One last item: even with nothing being printed the printer now occasionally
makes some noise and motion; a few moments ago it spit out a blank page. This
never happened before I tried getting GIMP to print with the system.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
