I couldn't send out any emails from evolution anymore. but I got an email from an ximian guy: --- From: Jeffrey Stedfast <fejj@ximian.com> Subject: Re: Re:[Evolution-hackers] evo / ORBit2 oddness... you are suffering from a glibc 2.3.2 bug in gethostbyaddr_r() - you'll need to remove all blank lines and comment blocks from /etc/hosts Jeff --- after I did what he said I can now send out emails without a problem Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.start evolution 2.create mail 3.try to send mail Actual Results: I get a message: Error while performing operation: MAIL FROM response error: Command unrecognized: "" Expected Results: send out mail
you forgot `emerge info` ... each of the 2.3.2 glibc ebuilds is diff and it matters very much which one you're using
sorry about that. here you go:Portage 2.0.49-r3 (default-x86-1.4, gcc-3.2.3, glibc-2.3.2-r1, 2.6.0-test7) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.0-test7 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1300MHz ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -O3 -funroll-loops -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -mfpmath=sse -mmmx -msse -msse2" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="gcc3" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /var/qmail/control /usr/share/config /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/sound/events /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /etc/init.d /etc/giFT /etc/X11/starthere /etc/X11 /etc/gconf /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="sandbox ccache autoaddcvs" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo"MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" SYNC="rsync://rsync.de.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 oss avi crypt cups encode foomaticdb gif jpeg libg++ mad mikmod motif mpeg ncurses nls pdflib png qt quicktime spell xml2 xmms xv zlib gdbm berkdb slang readline svga java sdl gpm tcpd pam libwww ssl perl python imlib oggvorbis gtk opengl mozilla acpi gtk2 X alsa -apm -kde -arts dvd tcltk mysql gstreamer esd sse gnome -ldap dvdr cdr tetex truetype"
Can you try glibc-2.3.2-r[56] please ?

I have tried with glibc-2.3.2-r6 and the function gethostbyname() doesn't work either.
*** Bug 31395 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
I reported #31395 only *after* trying to clean my /etc/hosts, and that did not fix it, so I do *not* think that #31395 is a DUPLICATE.
All right... mine was a programming problem, not a fault of glibc...
This bug has been inactive for 90 days or more. Can this bug still be reproduced? I couldn't reproduce it. Please test with glibc-2.3.2-r9 (or later) and reopen this bug if the problem persists.
