First thing I've noticed here is the the ebuild tries to set --with-docdir on configure which isn't a valid argument. Should be --docdir instead.
This, however doesn't fix it. It still fails. The error seems to be:
jw: There is no frontend called "/home/user-pool/users/sw6400/rc6488/gentoo/usr/share/sgml/docbook/utils-0.6.14/frontends/docbook".
Sounds like incorrect usage of the "jw" command.
I'm pretty sure none of this should happen with USE="-doc" though.

I think the real problem is in the docbook2man script that's run.  It seems to come from the install itself.  Does it contents give any clue?
