Description mehrunes 2010-01-14 10:14:17 UTC
kde-base/kate-4.3.3 text editor misses some top-level menu items and malfunctions

1) /usr/bin/kate writes diagnostic and error messages onto terminal; complains about wrong contents of auto-generated file /tmp/kde-me/kconf_updatepQ5559.tmp
================ garbage begin ========================================

2) kate does not automatically highlight syntax of /etc/X11/Xresources

3) kate does not allow to change document type, for proper syntax higlighting. Menu Documents>Highlight mode is nowhere to be found, contrary to what documentation says
====================== kate documentation piece start ======================
Kate will automatically detect the right syntax rules when you open a file, based on the MIME Type of the file, determined by its extension, or, if it has none, the contents. Should you experience a bad choice, you can manually set the syntax to use from the Documents->Highlight Mode menu.
====================== kate documentation piece end ======================
There is no menu `Documents' in my kate, though it is present on screenshot found at LinuxPlanet at http://www.linuxplanet.com/graphics/screenshots/1238603257kate_highlighting_3.png. My menu:

File Edit View Go ...

Linuxplanet menu:

File Edit Document View Bookmarks ...

4) Help->search fails to find anything about `syntax' or `highlight'. No, i did not forget to build help index and i did put check mark at `application manuals' when searching

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Make sure KDE stuff not installed
2. emerge =kde-base/kate-4.3.3
3. check that handbook and plasma USE flags are on with kate, others are off
4. kate /etc/X11/Xresources
5. compare with linuxplanet screenshot, to see menu difference

Actual Results:
1) Terminal is garbaged with useless diagnostic and one error message

2) Syntax not highlighted

3) Menu item `Document' missing

4) Help-search finds nothing

Expected Results:
1) Decent text editors like nedit, jedit, mcedit don't write any diagnostic onto terminal when installed properly

2) Since i'm using standard name Xresources, and the file contents is more or less standard, i expect syntax highlight to work properly right away

3) I expect to see `Document' menu item in top-level menu, which should be there according to kate documentation and is also visible at http://www.linuxplanet.com/graphics/screenshots/1238603257kate_highlighting_3.png

4) Help-search should find pieces of documentation which i easily found by browsing top-level contents

// i am currently looking for a UTF-capable replacement of nedit, and kate seems to be not very useful as a general-purpose editor, due to lots of bugs and slow start

hopefully i will attach my screenshot of kate and emerge --info soon

This looks like some borken config files are left over from a previous kate version.

Could you please try with a new user account?

Also, do you still have the problem with kde 4.3.5 or 4.4.2?
