Description Dave Thomas 2009-07-24 13:42:09 UTC
Hey all,

I think it's time I finally paid my dues and contributed some useful stuff to the community.

About me:
I've been a geek ever since I could reach the keyboard. I've been using Linux since 1995 and Gentoo since 2002/2003. I've done some embedded system development with Gentoo, some server stuff, but I mostly use it as my home development system. I can be reached most directly at dave (at) peoplemerge.com or on my cell at +1 213 705 7490.

I like to read & write good OO code. That usually means Java, but I know enough Ruby, Python, Perl, C/C++ to be dangerous. I like GOF patterns. I like automated tests.

What Have I been up to? What am I doing now?
I just left a 2 1/2 year stint without a vacation so I'm currently looking for short-term consulting gigs in California so I have lots of time to write open-source software.

What I think is cool:

I think the Cote d'Azur, where I just went on vacation, is cool and I think it would be great to set up shop there. I was born in Quebec and live in the USA but I think Europe is cool. I think learning languages is cool. My French more or less fluent and I've been able pick up the basics of Chinese, German, and Spanish.

I also think fast cars and airplanes are cool. But becoming an artist is a much cheaper hobby, so I've gotten into do pastel painting lately.

The projects I think are most interesting include Reductive Labs' Puppet (congrats - they just got their 1st round of funding), Controltier, and virtualization tools. Well there's a lot of other cool stuff going on, so please don't be insulted if I don't list your project here too.

What's next?
I've decided to start an open-source project that glues together cobbler, puppet, controltier, and the like to make higher levels of automation more practical.

I'm going to start by writing an ebuild for Cobbler (used to deploy systems starting with PXE boot, running kickstart, etc).

Dave

Hi Dave,

the way to developer status is documented here[1]. You can view our openings here[2], but teams not listed there will also recruit you if you show interest and ability.
If you need help with creating ebuilds we have the #gentoo-dev-help irc channel for that and we have lots of other channels to interact directly with developers and users on all topics concerning gentoo.
I hope this helps to get you started.

Marijn

As implied by Marijn the official recruitment process continues when you have more experience working with existing developers and because of this I will close this as LATER and this bug can be reopened when you are ready to take the step to become a gentoo developer (needs sponsorship from an existing dev).

Also if you have any questions at any point, you can email recruiters@gentoo.org.
