Description Michal Špondr 2009-04-18 20:23:01 UTC
If I try to connect to the Internet through Bluetooth and my mobile phone using the pand (according to the documentation), I can't do it, because "pand" isn't in packages bluez-utils which is recommended to install.
In the past I was able to connect through it. I don't know where did the pand script disappeared, but now it's not possible to run bluetooth Internet through this manual.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:

Actual Results:
# pand
bash: pand: command not found

Expected Results:
Update the documentation (or repair the package?)

# emerge --info

CCing the maintainers of our bluetooth stuff. Guys, since the 3.x stack was stabilized, I'm thinking that our bluetooth doc probably needs a complete overhaul. Please advise.

Thanks!

yes, it does. As a quick action could add a marker there to indicate that it's for 2.x
Comment 3 Joe Guithues 2009-07-16 22:17:03 UTC
I'm gonna have to agree that it definitely needs some work. One thing I notice is that the link (near the top of the page) to supported bluetooth devices is broken. http://www.holtmann.org/linux/bluetooth/features.html is the link I'm referring, and the site appears to be unmaintained...
Comment 4 nm (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-07-16 23:04:42 UTC
Okay, I fixed the dead link. Stupid upstream breaking stuff left and right. Same thing happened at bluez.org; their wiki is completely dead. I removed all mentions to any HCLs.

Also, for the pand stuff . . . I just deleted the entire chapter on setting up PAN.

None of us know how the hell to do it, so we need some instructions *ASAP*. Removing a whole chapter is an emergency fix; it's not a real solution.

Given the new "bluez" package, probably our entire guide needs to be updated anyway. I know that I no longer use bluez-libs or bluez-utils, just net-wireless/bluez and blueman. I know these are still ~arch, but we should start overhauling the document anyway.

But first and foremost, we really, really need a chapter explaining the correct method of setting up PAN!

Please, cosult the Bug 278472 . There's a guide how to successfully set up PAN.

Should I close this bug as duplicate of bug #278472 then?

Why would you do that?

Please do not change the status of bugs; let the docs team handle that. There is still work to be done on the guide.

The packages bluez-utils is not in the tree any longer. It should be removed from the docs.

For the NAP/PAN part, I found this howto working with current bluez-4.101-r1:
