I don't recall any reports for keyboard changes in xterm.
But I do recall seeing some other comments recently about
irssi - more details might help focus on the problem.
Comment 2 Vytautas 2009-05-04 09:35:55 UTC
maybe bug should be renamed...
Problem remains even witout irssi.
Problem is that Alt+/number/ gives character instead of hotkey action.
Comment 3 Thomas Dickey 2009-05-04 10:04:44 UTC
Xterm has several resources dealing with adding
an escape character before another character (or
escape sequence). For example (man xterm):

eightBitInput,
metaSendsEscape,
altSendsEscape,
altIsNotMeta

None of those has changed
recently, as far as I recall (though it's
possible that some change to OP's resource
files have changed - or ongoing breakage from
xorg in the xkb configuration, which also is
a possibility).

Maybe it never worked in the way I want and this is just like feature request?
Comment 5 Thomas Dickey 2009-05-05 10:44:21 UTC
Something like that - alt + {arbitrary character} was
briefly a feature about ten years ago, and amended to
only apply to function- and cursor-keys:
