Run 'dmesg' after failed emerge. If you see the follwing

Build[25093]: segfault at 0 ip b7f1086e sp bfe47450 error 4 in vxs.so[b7f0e000+5000]

Try to locate the file vxs.so (might be in /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8/i686-linux/auto/version/vxs/vxs.so) and move it away to a safe place (just to be able to put it backif needed). Then emerge perl-core/version again.

perl-core/version-0.78
