Description cpa 2009-03-09 17:18:14 UTC
When you go to System->Shutdown->Shutdown (or reboot), the fsplash it show only 2 seconds, later the splash go to vervose mode, but not error is on the screen.

If you shutdown from console (halt or shutdown), or from GDM, the fsplash it's showing correctly!!! O_o

Also, if you are on Gnome session and open a gnome-terminal and shutdown the system with the comand "shutdown" or "halt", the fsplash works fine...

Only fail when you shutdown the system from the menu (System->Shutdown)...

Installed versions:
GDM => 2.20.9-r1
Gnome => 2.24.1
Xorg => 7.4 (server 1.5.3-r2)
splashutils => 1.5.4.2

adding spock to CC since he's maintaining fbsplash utils in gentoo.
@spock, could you shed some light on what could cause the fbsplash to go to verbose mode ? I'm mostly clueless about fbsplash.

Tested at work with a similar soft configuration.
At home, I've testing on a laptop with a Nvidia Graphics card (with binary drivers)
At work, I'm testing on a Acer Veriton with an ATI Graphics card (also binary drivers)

Same results. When I turn off my computer from menu option, I lost the splash screen...

No.. I guess it is something related with the timings (the splash start very soon maybe)... sometimes (only on reboot) the splash is working right...

In fact, if you press F2 you could see the shutdown splash again...

Don't know, but it is very annoying ...

That would be my guess as well (can't test it as I don't use GNOME).

Could someone please check what exactly is being done when the shutdown
menu option is used? Does it execute a script? A binary? I suspect it
starts the reboot/shutdown, then does something else, and then chvt's
to tty1. By that time, the splash screen is already up and the chvt
switches it to the verbose mode.

The fix would be to do the chvt earlier (perhaps even before actually
starting the reboot) or avoiding it altogether.

I would like to check it, but I don't know how...

Maybe this could be checked by a gnome maintainer, couldn't be?

Best regards...

I am not sure if this is related, but I am seeing a strange behavior since a lot of time.

I don't use fbsplash but, if I shutdown my computer directly from gnome-session, I am moved to console and only a red message showing that system is being halted is shown. I see no message from init.d scripts. On the other hand, if I halt the system from gdm instead of gnome-session, I can see the init.d messages.

Same Problem. At boot all works well but at shutdown or halt from Gnome only the "Broadcast Message from root "System will be shutdown""is visible . If i press F2 (at shutdown or reboot) the splash screen is visible.

Does the behavior change if you set/unset consolekit USE flag in your system?

If still valid, maybe would also be interesting to test with 2.32 as 2.20 won't probably get many more fixes
