I cannot change virtual terminals. Once X boots up I am stuck, ctrl + alt 1 does not bring up a terminal. If I open vmware and start a virtual machine I can change consoles. I'm using the latest nvidia driver and VESA framebuffer. I have removed both of these before and the problem still persists.

what version of vmware ? what version of glibc ? `emerge info` ? do you run vmware in full screen or in a window ?
vmware has nothing to do with it. I had this problem before using vmware at all. The same thing happens in XDirectFB so its probably not X. This did not happen in Mandrake. I'm using version 2.3.2-r1 of glibc. Is there any other info you would like?
what version of XFree86 Xserver are you using?
Which kernel is this? 2.6? Did you compile in /dev/pts filesystem support? Does the screen just go blank, or can't you get to vc/1 at all?
Was is a typo or were you not actually using ctrl-alt-f1?
Sorry yes is a typo. After experiementing I think I have found part of the problem. As a user if I type: chvt 1 I get chvt: VT_ACTIVATE: Operation not permitted As root I can change VT sucessfully using chvt
This seems to be the same as #26648.
and it did not answer my question: is this related to the x server? and your answer was: chvt. that does not satisfy me. tell me the versions of the mandrake X server and the X server you used for reproducing the problem, please. thanks, Alex (will close bug in 2 weeks if no answer)
Moving from Xfree 3.3.6 i think to 4.1.0 started the problem if I remember correctly. It was so long ago. I don't think Xfree restores permissions to /dev/console This system has been up and running for over a year not so my guess is its a config file problem or permissions. I am currently using xfree 4.3.0-r6 and udev. The problem existed with devfs as well.
