Description Julian Pietron 2008-07-03 16:04:41 UTC
Suddenly my k3b doesn't want to burn DVD-Rs anymore. The complete log output is appended to this bug report. The error occured after a kernel upgrade (2.6.21 to 2.6.24) but even booting the old kernel changed nothing in the error output. I tried the old ATAPI/IDE-Stack and the new PATA-Stack (NVIDIA-chipset), but the error keeps the same.
Perhaps someone of you is able to help me.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a DVD in k3b
2. Burn
3. Burning exits unsuccessfully after a few seconds

You don't have a problm with K3B, but get an i/o error running growisofs.

Please provide the ouput of emerge -pv app-cdr/dvd+rw-tools and emerge --info. Is this problem reproducible with gentoo-sources instead the unsupported tuxonice kernel?

Installed version of dvd+-rw-tools is 7.1 .

I don't think the problem is related to the tuxonice-kernel because many other people with other distributions (and other kernels) suddenly experience the same problem (for example upgrade from openSuSE 10.2 to 10.3 seems to cause similar problems), but I will check it later this day or tomorrow.

> I don't think the problem is related to the tuxonice-kernel

Is to the degree irrelevant, as no Gentoo developer is in any form asked to deal with bug reports of users breaking their system with a rediculous set of compiler flags, users using unsupported software we simply refuse to check against or other issues, beyond our control. Tracking down bug reports can be very time consuming, you know.
Comment 5 Julian Pietron 2008-08-20 12:23:44 UTC
Tried the same now with gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r9, no differences related to the error. DVD+R burning: I tried DVD+R instead of -R. First disc burned worked as expected, but any disc inserted afterwards (and after a number of reboots ...) raised a SYNCHRONOUS FLUSH CACHE error (afair, I can look up the exact error, if you want to).
Comment 6 Julian Pietron 2008-08-20 12:28:19 UTC
Some other information which might be useful: Simulating the burning process works and does not raise any errors. Elsewhere I found someone who solved a similar problem by disabling hal-polling on the relevant drive, but this does not help either at my side. Something IS burned on the discs, because after the burning process fails, k3b recognizes them not as "empty" anymore, but as "appendable".
Comment 7 merwan kashouty 2008-12-26 02:43:44 UTC
this was also happening to me and i am and have been running gentoo-sources... no crazy flag settings in make.conf either.... i am not sure what has changed but for me setting the speed at which the dvd iso is burned enables growisofs to work without error... if k3b or cd writer in gnome is set to auto it will fail to write.
Comment 8 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2012-03-18 16:12:36 UTC
Is this still valid with a fully updated system and recent kernels?
Comment 9 Ian Stakenvicius (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-12-02 19:24:25 UTC
I might be hijacking this bug, but:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=810483

..and the patch listed in comment #6 got rid of the error for me.
