Description brankob 2008-05-04 13:19:41 UTC
Totem as it is installed by portage is next to useless as it performs very slowly- almost like a slideshow on fullscreen.

After some googling, I found that others had the same problem, too, at least with totem that was built with gstremer backend, while those built on xine perform O.K.

I did an emerge -pv totem and found no USE flag for gstremer/xine backend, so i took a look at ebuild and found that it depends on gstreamer.

After that I have unemerged it and installed it manually with xine backend and now it works fine.

Why is ebuild for totem using bad defaults without possibility for selection of other option ?

Or maybe it is something with the way I did emerge it ?

Here are couple of emerge -pv's:

emerge -pv totem:
[ebuild N ] media-video/totem-2.22.2 USE="gnome lirc nsplugin nvtv python -bluetooth -debug -galago -nautilus -seamonkey -tracker -xulrunner"

emerge -pv gstreamer:
[ebuild R ] media-libs/gstreamer-0.10.19 USE="nls -debug -test"

Or is it maybe because gst-plugin-opengl is masked for amd64 ?

My machine is AMD X2 6000+ with 4GB RAM, nvidia NF5700 chipset motherboard and GF8800GT graphic card.

I will attach otput of emerge --info...

Reproducible: Always

Actual Results:
Totem is very slow- has stuttering, jerrky picture, especially when playing on fullscreen

Expected Results:
smooth playback

What kind of media are you playing that is slow (something concrete, all of them, etc) - what codec, what container.

There is no xine choice because no-one has fixed http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=459539

(and, FTR, playback of all media is fine on all my systems with the gstreamer backend, so it's not a generic problem)

What video output plugin do you have selected? Use gstreamer-properties to find out and to try out other plugins.

Thanks

gstreamer-properties has four options:

-Autodetect
- X Window system ( No Xv )
-X Window system ( X11/XShm/Xv)
- Custom ( Pipeline: xvimagesink device="0" )

Totem is slow with all four options albeight option 2 ( No Xv) seems a bit slower than the rest...

are you running the closed source driver ?
Comment 8 Rémi Cardona (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-08-25 09:43:02 UTC
Please run the following command :

gst-launch-0.10 -v playbin uri=file:///full/path/to/file

and paste the output here, if you still have the issue. And please attach your full /var/log/Xorg.0.log. Please don't hesitate to reopen this bug with all the requested information if you still experience this issue.
