Description Sebastian Hase 2008-02-18 19:59:29 UTC
The nwmovies extension for the game Neverwinter Nights does not work on amd64. Don't know for sure if the preloading problem is the cause or the missing libSDL_gfx.so (install of media-libs/sdl-gfx changed nothing, I assume it have to be a 32bit lib).

Output from ~/.nwn/de/nwmovies.log:

I can't reproduce this, and sdl-gfx is certainly not needed here. I have it working out of the box on both x86 and amd64.

It's not only nwmovies that doesn't work here. Does the hardware mouse work? It really looks like you played with the libs in the nwn startup script, not sure whether you did or not though. Please make a full and clean reinstall of the whole thing and report back. This includes totally removing your local .nwn directory (after backing up the saves/ subdirectory, for sure).

Denis.
Comment 2 Sebastian Hase 2008-02-20 20:23:38 UTC
I removed all nwn packages, rm -rf /opt/nwn and rm -rf ~/.nwn. Then re-installed nwn, nwn-data and nwmovies. Same effect.

OK, reopening then.

* Does nwmouse work even when nwmovies fail ?
* Does nwmouse work when nwmovies is unmerged ?

Sorry about that. This happened to me with the original NWN Play disc. Clean it up carefully and try it in a new CD player. What I did was I tried it on a number of CD players until it worked (asked my friends, family, etc...) until it worked. I have since then backed up all my NWN CDs on a DVD, and I'm considering buying a Diamond or 3-in-1 edition for the maintenance of these packages.

Once your NWN CDs are backed up, you can export variables CD_ROOT_1, CD_ROOT_2, etc. up to CD_ROOT_5 (if you have SoU and HoU), which point to the path to each of your CD images (no ISO images, just files) and the nwn-data ebuild will pick them up. This is how we debug these ebuilds and can install/reinstall many times in an unattented way without going crazy.

Denis.

Seems both to work. I removed the nwmouse folder with the precomplied cursors and I get the actual selected cursors from kde in the game. But there seems to be a little difference. Without nwmovies installed I can use AltGr + Return to windowing the game and move the cursor out off the game window. With nwmovies installed AltGr + Return works too, but I can't leave the window with the cursor.

The only difference is that on my machine I have app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-xlibs-20071230. So you may want to try this. What version of binkplayer do you have?

Also, could you please try and check what happens with nwmovies and without nwmouse? It may take time but we'll nail it down. What bothers me is why are your systems looking for libSDL_gfx.so? I don't have sdl-gfx installed on my machine and it all works perfectly. One way to maybe find out more would be to cat /var/db/pkg/category/package-version/NEEDED for nwn, nwmouse, nwmovies and binkplayer (replace category and package-version with what's appropriate).

I tried app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-xlibs-20071230 and it sadly changed nothing.

I tried all combinations which came into my mind, all binkplayer versions, nwmovies alone and nwmovies + nwmouse. All gives the same error. The only difference is the different appearance of the mouse grab which I mentioned in my last post.

I can not find any sdl-gfx entries in the NEEDED files.

But I find some mention of it nwmovies.pl:
# If you have SDL_gfx installed/symlinked inside of ~nwn and have a big enough

I tried also to compile nwmovies by my self, but with the same result. It compiles cleanly against the 32-bit libelf in /opt/nwn/lib, but I get the same error at running. And I know it works as I changed to amd64.

Short update:
I switched recently back to x86 (not because this bug!) and determine that nwmovies does not work for me on x86 either. The nwmovies.log is quit the same, only without the ld.so errors. The libSDL_gfx.so error goes away after I installed
media-libs/sdl-gfx. But no video was shown.

Then I tried the precompiled version from the latest release of nwmovies 4.0RC1 (which you can find here: http://nwn.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.html?topic=629464&forum=72&sp=0) and it works fine. I doesn't test to compile nwmovies.so by myself.

From what upstream's doc says, you should only need sdl-gfx when you upscale videos from their original size to full screen size, which is not recommended. So if you don't upscale videos then this is really weird. I still haven't been able to reproduce your error.

Anyway, I have committed the new version of nwnmovies along with a new version of nwn. Watch out, Bioware doesn't translate patches anymore, so if you were not playing in english you'll have to follow the postinst instructions.

Could you please test the new nwmovies *before* you switch to the new nwn and report back ? I'm very interested in that because I can't test on amd64 any more. It works here on x86 and elsewhere on amd64 so you shouldn't have any problems.

Thanks in advance.
Denis.

Hi Denis,

the new nwmovies works with nwn-1.68-r4 (haven't had the time to test the newer) on my amd64 machine while the old 0.1 still does not work!

Thank you :)

I guess we'll never know why... Closing this, then. Thanks.

I finally managed to reproduce and fix this bug. Update to nwn-1.68-r5 or nwn-1.69-r1 (depending on whether you need languages other than english or not) to get rid of it.

Denis.
