I can replicate it now! I though it was random but I did this twice and it locked up on both times. Hold down ctrl and then start clicking with the left mouse button and using the scroll wheel (holding down the ctrl button the whole time)
*** Bug 209373 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
I noticed this in your log as well as mine: (WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory) I added 'acpid' to my boot runlevel, and Xorg hasn't locked up since. Hopefully it helps you too.
Thanks Curtis. Adding the acpid daemon to startup fixed the problem. It seems like HAL was locking onto the acpid event file in /proc. With acpid running, HAL and xorg and the nvidia drivers all connect to the acpid socket. Another problem: evdev-1.2 removes the Name option. They didn't bother updating the man page and there is a bug on the freedesktop bugzilla about this. I now have evdev-1.2 / xorg running stable. I don't know what the right way to close out this bug should be. Do we need a warning about acpid? HAL should really issue a warning at boot about not being able to find the acpid socket before grabbing directly onto the events from /proc.
This has nothing to do with acpid as it also happens if X successfully binds to acpid socket - at least for me... seems to be a software bug, but can't remember when problems began
RE: Comment #9 From Stefan Werner I no longer believe it fixes the problem either. I've had this box (nvidia/amd) lock up with this error only once since I thought I had fixed it, but it did happen. I've now got another box doing this daily that is a Dell P4 with onboard Intel 82845G video. The strange thing about that box is it does it without anyone logged in, just at the GDM login screen.
I have installed this versions: x11-proto/renderproto-0.9.2 x11-libs/libXrender-0.9.2 x11-base/xorg-server-1.3.0.0-r5 x11-drivers/xf86-input-keyboard-1.1.1-r1 x11-drivers/xf86-input-mouse-1.2.3 and my system seems stable for four days now.
There is an Xorg bug filed for this here: http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14633

This stabilized my system: emerge --unmerge x11-drivers/xf86-input-mouse emerge x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev
> This stabilized my system: > emerge --unmerge x11-drivers/xf86-input-mouse > emerge x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev I forgot to add, that I am on ~amd64.
I have removed xf86-input-mouse and xf86-input-keyboard and my Xorg server seems stable as well using only xf86-input-evdev. Thank you very much Pawel.
I'm glade that it works for you.
It seems that it didn't completely fix the problem for me. I got brave and re-enabled compiz. My X server froze within a few minutes. If I disable the composite extension I am able to use Maya now at least. Hopefully it isn't just coincidence that Maya is stable these past few days. It would be nice to even have a starting point for tracking down this bug. As of yet I can't find any way to predictably reproduce it.
I'm also experiencing this. This started happening to my system once I switched the keyboard to use the evdev driver (I've been using evdev as a mouse driver for some time already). I'm also using compiz on proprietary NVidia drivers. I've seen similar lockups previously, but they were quite easy to fix. All I had to do is switch to a console (I've bound an ACPI event to do this, as my keyboard was locked up) and start kwin with the --replace option. After that the X server was back in business. Now even this doesn't work. emerge --info: Portage 2.1.4.4 (default-linux/amd64/2007.0/desktop, gcc-4.1.2, glibc-2.6.1-r0, 2.6.24-tuxonice-r3 x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.24-tuxonice-r3 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7200 @ 2.00GHz Timestamp of tree: Sat, 22 Mar 2008 19:30:06 +0000 distcc 2.18.3 x86_64-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [disabled] app-shells/bash: 3.2_p17-r1 dev-java/java-config: 1.3.7, 2.1.4 dev-lang/python: 2.4.4-r9 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r6 sys-apps/baselayout: 1.12.11.1 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.18.1-r2 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.61-r1 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2, 1.10 sys-devel/binutils: 2.18-r1 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.4.0-r4 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.26 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.23-r3 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64" CBUILD="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-Os -pipe -march=nocona -fno-ident" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /lib/initng/scripts /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/gconf /etc/php/apache2-php5/ext-active/ /etc/php/cgi-php5/ext-active/ /etc/php/cli-php5/ext-active/ /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/splash /etc/terminfo /etc/texmf/web2c /etc/udev/rules.d" CXXFLAGS="-Os -pipe -march=nocona -fno-ident" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="distlocks metadata-transfer parallel-fetch sandbox sfperms strict unmerge-orphans userfetch" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://src.gentoo.pl http://gentoo.po.opole.pl" LANG="pl_PL" LC_ALL="pl_PL.UTF-8" LDFLAGS="-Wl,--as-needed -Wl,--hash-style=both -Wl,-O1" LINGUAS="pl" MAKEOPTS="-j3" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/portage/local/layman/initng /usr/portage/local/layman/hanno-xgl /usr/portage/local/layman/arcon-portage /usr/portage/local/layman/xeffects /usr/portage/local/layman/custom-kernels /usr/portage/local/layman/iwlwifi /usr/portage/local/layman/sajinet /usr/local/portage /usr/portage/local/minefield" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X a52 aac acpi alsa amd64 amr apache2 arts bash-completion berkdb bluetooth bzip2 cairo cddb cdr cli crypt css cups dbus dell divx dri dts dvb dvd dvdr dvdread eds emacs emboss emerald encode esd evo exif fam fbcon fbsplash ffmpeg firefox flac fortran gcj gif gimp glitz gmedia gpm gstreamer gtk hal iconv id3 ipv6 isdnlog java jpeg kde kdehiddenvisibility kipi lzo mad matroska midi mikmod mmap mmx mmxext mp3 mpeg mudflap musepack mysql ncurses newspr nls nptl nptlonly nsplugin ogg opengl openmp oss pam pcre pdf perl png pppd python qt3 qt3support qt4 quicktime readline realmedia reflection rtc samba sdl session skey slang smp spell spl splash sse sse2 ssl ssse3 subversion svg tcpd threads tiff truetype unicode v4l v4l2 vcd vorbis webdav wifi wma wmf wmp x264 xcomposite xforms xinerama xml xorg xv xvid xvmc zlib" ALSA_CARDS="hda-intel usb-audio" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw asym copy dmix dshare dsnoop empty extplug file hooks iec958 ioplug ladspa lfloat linear meter mulaw multi null plug rate route share shm softvol" APACHE2_MODULES="actions alias auth_basic auth_digest authn_anon authn_dbd authn_dbm authn_default authn_file authz_dbm authz_default authz_groupfile authz_host authz_owner authz_user autoindex cache dav dav_fs dav_lock dbd deflate dir disk_cache env expires ext_filter file_cache filter headers ident imagemap include info log_config logio mem_cache mime mime_magic negotiation proxy proxy_ajp proxy_balancer proxy_connect proxy_http rewrite setenvif so speling status unique_id userdir usertrack vhost_alias" APACHE2_MPMS="worker" ELIBC="glibc" INITNG_PLUGINS="also bash_launcher chdir chroot conflict cpout critical ctrlaltdel debug_commands fmon fstat initctl interactive last limit logfile lockfile netdev netprobe idleprobe ngc4 nge pause provide reload renice simple_launcher stcmd stdout suid syncron syslog sysreq unneeded iparser envparser rlparser splash" INPUT_DEVICES="evdev keyboard mouse synaptics" KERNEL="linux" LCD_DEVICES="bayrad cfontz cfontz633 glk hd44780 lb216 lcdm001 mtxorb ncurses text" LINGUAS="pl" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARDS="vesa nv nvidia" Unset: CPPFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, PORTAGE_COMPRESS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS
I also have this problem since the update to xorg-server 1.4 with nvidia drivers. Interestingly it doesn't happen when I do "eselect opengl xorg-x11" (instead of nvidia). I've tried both evdev-only and keyboard/mouse setup, but it has no effect as far as I can tell. Is this issue being worked on? (I dont see anything happen on the freedesktop bug mentioned before...). Also in my opinion this bug should be rated critical since it is a crash that leads to possible loss of data. tobias@localhost ~ $ emerge --info Portage 2.1.5 (default-linux/x86/2006.1, gcc-4.1.2, I've been encountering the problem in the last couple of weeks or so (exact timeframe is uncertain). Intel 965G graphics w/Xorg driver, not proprietary NVidia. Created attachment 165726 [details] xorg.log I encountered this problem too. My video card is intel 855GME I using xf86-video-2.4.2-r1 and xorg-server-1.5.0 Maybe I encounter this problem before, because as when I was using xorg-1.4.2, I found xf86-video-i810-2* would cause my computer to hang up during power off from X. As a result, I still using xf86-video-i810-1.7.4 until I upgrade to xorg-server-1.5.0.

Forget the most import part.... This lock up happens when I lock the screen and power off my screen. when I try to go back to X, the screen was just black, and my computer gave no responds. I can only press down the power button for seconds to power off my computer and restart it. It also happens sometimes when I power off from X as well. In fact, after I googled, I found lots of people experienced this problem but with different drivers.
Hello, I got the same bug, and I have an important fact to add: On my system, the freezes happen 1. Only while video playback, and 2. The duration between the hangs depends on the bitrate of the video. This means, that on a DVD playback, I get a hang every ~5 minutes, and on a typical YouTube video, it hangs every ~20 minutes. The good point: 1. I still have full input control. (I even can stop the video via pressing space, and the mouse moves. I can't click tough.) 2. After waiting some seconds (~10-40), the system works again. Another fact: It seems to happen more often, when Java (Azureus, eating much RAM, moderate CPU and HDD) runs or ran in that same session (= fixed with a reboot). Can anyone reproduce anything similar? My bet (straight from the gut) is on the poor chipset (Onboard networking dies randomly too. I had do add an extra card.), combined with some other rare driver-related event. For details on "lswh", "emerge --info" and "xorg.conf" on my system, see the attached file below. CPU

Sorry for not replying earlier, this bug somehow fell through the cracks. Can any of you still reproduce this bug with xorg-server 1.5.3-r5? I've put in a lot of input fixes, maybe this bug has been fixed too. If any of you can reproduce, please don't hesitate to reopen this bug. Thanks

Please file a bug in FreeDesktop's bugzilla and paste the url here. Thanks
I'm getting this bug consistently. It happens usually at the gdm screen. Sometimes I am able to log in for 2-3 minutes before X freezes. I've noticed that this happens only with kernels > 2.6.25-r4. I've tried 2.6.27, 2.6.28, 2.6.29 and 2.6.30 and It always hangs. No problems with the 2.6.25-r4 though. I have an integrated intel video chip. I'm using x11-base/xorg-server-1.5.3-r6. I'm attaching some more info below.
