Here is more information on the bug: This got worked around in my system by exporting LC_ALL=C before emerging. Apparently there is a problem in sysconf.c which prevents it from working properly in a utf environment. Federico, this may work for you as well, as I notice you also run in a utf environment.
I tried to emerge after exporting LC_ALL=C, but it doesn't work.
it builds/installs fine with LC_ALL=C and LC_ALL=POSIX... it fails with el_GR and el_GR.UTF8, so i guess it's not just the UTF8 locale that causes the problem...
