Description Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-11-01 10:44:41 UTC
If someone requires this functionality, they can use app-admin/gamin, which - unlike FAM - has actually alive upstream and is a much better implementation.

Nothing in the tree
Comment 1 Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-11-01 10:45:33 UTC
Bleh, the comment got truncated.

Nothing in the tree requires app-admin/fam, all ebuilds have been switched to virtual/fam.

gamin (and inotify for that matter) is local -- fam works over RPC, and is pretty much a MUST if using an NFS mounted INBOX (or multiple simultaneous remote X logins with NFS mounted home dirs).
gamin is a great alternative for LOCAL workstations, but as long as there's no networked alternative to SGI fam, I think it must stay. Are there known bugs since 'has alive upstream' is an issue?

Eh, beyond the fact that even getting it to work is a small miracle, it's a nifty security loophole, personally wouldn't call this a feature. :P Locally-initiated modifications of the NFS files work just fine w/ gamin, remote ones - no they don't, really couldn't care less personally, see above.

> Are there known bugs since 'has alive upstream' is an issue?

Yeah, there are tons of issues that noone gives a damn about... as said, upstream is dead... See http://tinyurl.com/2qu357

Notably the 'lets eat 100% CPU' [1] and 'cannot unmount any removable media' [2] "features" make fam completely unusable for me.

i get this every time, when i upgrade e.g. gnome

Unmerging fam should fix that
Comment 7 Samuli Suominen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-05-27 13:13:45 UTC
I vote we close this as RESOLVED, LATER. While I do prefer gamin, last I checked fam worked fine too (I'm using them for Thunar so it can update files realtime)

Hmm, I have fam installed here but haven't /knowingly/ used it. Since it hasn't caused a problem for me, I agree with drac, leave it for now.
