Starting kaffeine to view DVB-T television. It starts to display, about a half second of sound comes and then the X-session aborts and i find myself at the KDM login dialog. Does this happen w/ x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati?
I can not use the ati drivers coming with xorg. As far as i know they don't support the ATI X1400 chipset. Also i have a display resolution of 1680x1050.
Well, then I'm afraid you'll have to complain to ATI, because kernel folks will refuse to deal with issues caused by proprietary binary drivers and we cannot fix those anyway. You can try w/ your luck w/ 8.40.4 meanwhile.
@Jakub Moc: I interstand this fully and agree. I would prefer to have a driver delivered with xorg, but currently i have to stick with the fglrx driver. After some debugging and searching i got a hint in the web. Actually the DRI support of the fglrx driver from ATi seems to be somewhat problematic. After disabling DRI the problem disappears. Modify the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf in the following way: ---------------- cut ---------------- ... Section "Device" Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]" Driver "fglrx" ... Option "no_dri" "yes" ... EndSection ---------------- cut ---------------- Hope that helps others which encounter the same problem. I hope to get the open source ATi driver supporting the X1400 to appear in the portage tree sometime in near future.

No change. I had to disable DRI to get it working.
Take this w/ ATI/AMD, sorry.
