during an emerge -puND world gcc needed an upgrade and failed.  i have no clue why and was pointed to posting a bug report.

somehow i had 4.1.1-r3 on my system but that wasn't set as the gcc version to compile with, 3.4.6 was.  changed that and seems to be going smoothly now.  can't believe i've been running 3.4.6 for so long, apparently.
