Description metan 2007-05-17 19:49:07 UTC
When upgrading x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati from 6.6.1 to 6.6.3 MergedFB stopped to work. On xserver start it force my two monitors to Clone instead of "CRT2Position" "LeftOf". Looking into logs show that no suitable modeline is found for CRT and thus MergedFB is forced to Clone. Current workaround is to downgrade to 6.6.1.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Setup dualhead configuration
2. Upgrade xf86-video-ati to 6.6.3
3. Restart xserver

Actual Results:
MergedFB is forced to Clone.

Expected Results:
MergedFB should be able to run dualhead configuration.

Graphics card:

Asus radeon 9250
ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] (rev 01)

I confirm similar problems with a different ATI card:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R250 [Mobility FireGL 9000] (rev 02)

In my case the other screen always stays blank. I can make either work in single screen mode, but not both.

Downgrading to 6.6.1 helps (MergeFB works both in cloning and in virtual desktop mode).

actually Bug 179048 seems like a duplicate of this one.

I am wondering is this is not maybe the bug in xorg-server instead of a bug in xf86-video-ati. There is a patch attached to the xorg-server bug, but I have not tried it to see if it solves my problem, as I am not sure how to apply the patch and recompile xorg-server.

Can you try out 6.6.192? Please reopen when you reply.

Well, using the latest version, my external monitor comes up in clone mode (as intended), but the whole desktop is way to bright, as in colors are several magntitudes skewed towards white, making almost all colors pure white. My internal laptop LCD just works fine.

Not sure why your screen has gone several shades of white, but does going back to the older driver fix this ?

As for the original report, this sounds like your monitor is reporting bad DDC information and that's why the new Xserver code is filtering out your modes.

Post a log file from /var/log/Xorg.0.log and I'll take a look.

If this is the case, the only fix is to adjust your xorg.conf and turn off DDC and insert some slightly bogus monitor timings to allow the bad mode to work.
