Description oktay altunergil 2003-03-08 10:44:54 UTC
When I run mozilla, no window shows up. The command just hangs seemingly doing nothing. I have had similar issues when there was problems with loading fonts, but this doesn't seem to be like that.

Since there's no other information I can provide, I will add the 'strace' output in the details.

Thank you.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:

1. type 'mozilla' enter :)
2.
3.

Actual Results:
nothing

Expected Results:
mozilla start

partial strace output: (seems to do 'gettimeofday' multiple times with no success)

Does mozilla run as expected if started by root? If so, check the permissions of all files in ~/.mozilla and /usr/lib/mozilla, paying particular attention to /usr/lib/mozilla/chrome and /usr/lib/mozilla/components, making sure that the directories and sub-directories are 0755 and files are 0644. The aforementioned chrome and components directories often end up with pieces owned by root with the execute and read bits cleared for group and other, making it impossible for mozilla to find files it needs when its started by regular users.

If the permissions aren't the problem, run strace with:

strace -f -omozilla.strace -e trace=open `which mozilla`

Look for open() syscalls that return -1 (the system error string should follow). If nothing interesting shows up, add read and write to the -e option:

strace -f -omozilla.strace -e trace=open,read,write `which mozilla`
Comment 2 oktay altunergil 2003-03-08 15:21:43 UTC
The output I presented was when running as 'root'.

I have had to revert to an earlier Mozilla release since I didn't have another decent browser and I have to do some work. I will try and reinstall the beta version when I'm done and run traceroute as you've suggested.

did you install your system correctly ?

15.Setting your time zone

Now you need to set your time zone.

Look for your time zone (or GMT if you are using Greenwich Mean Time) in /usr/share/zoneinfo. Then, make a symbolic link to /etc/localtime by typing:

Code listing 15.1: Creating a symbolic link for time zone

# ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/path/to/timezonefile /etc/localtime

the gettimeofday/poll thing is normal ...

if you run any interactive program, you will see a ton of those messages ... it is basically the app waiting for an event ...

what happens if you nuke your preferences directory ?
Comment 6 Thomas Heiserowski 2003-03-10 10:31:19 UTC
I had the same problem with mozilla refusing to launch and giving a hint, what it might be.

When I moved my preferences to another directory, I was able to start mozilla at once.

$mv .mozilla/ to .mozilla_old/

I closed mozilla and moved the new preferences dir to .mozilla_new/ and my old one to .mozilla/

All my old preferences were recovered and Mozilla works fine.
Comment 7 oktay altunergil 2003-03-11 12:57:55 UTC
Hello,

I emerged mozilla-1.3_beta again today. Without removing the .mozilla directory it works fine. I didn't have to do anything this time. It just works. It should be fine to close this bug. Thank you for your time.
