When I run mozilla, no window shows up. The command just hangs seemingly doing nothing. I have had similar issues when there was problems with loading fonts, but this doesn't seem to be like that. Does mozilla run as expected if started by root? If so, check the permissions of all files in ~/.mozilla and /usr/lib/mozilla, paying particular attention to /usr/lib/mozilla/chrome and /usr/lib/mozilla/components, making sure that the directories and sub-directories are 0755 and files are 0644. The aforementioned chrome and components directories often end up with pieces owned by root with the execute and read bits cleared for group and other, making it impossible for mozilla to find files it needs when its started by regular users. If the permissions aren't the problem, run strace with: strace -f -omozilla.strace -e trace=open `which mozilla` Look for open() syscalls that return -1 (the system error string should follow). If nothing interesting shows up, add read and write to the -e option: strace -f -omozilla.strace -e trace=open,read,write `which mozilla`
The output I presented was when running as 'root'. I have had to revert to an earlier Mozilla release since I didn't have another decent browser and I have to do some work. I will try and reinstall the beta version when I'm done and run traceroute as you've suggested. Oktay

the gettimeofday/poll thing is normal ... if you run any interactive program, you will see a ton of those messages ... it is basically the app waiting for an event ... what happens if you nuke your preferences directory ?
I had the same problem with mozilla refusing to launch and giving a hint, what it might be. When I moved my preferences to another directory, I was able to start mozilla at once. $mv .mozilla/ to .mozilla_old/ I closed mozilla and moved the new preferences dir to .mozilla_new/ and my old one to .mozilla/ All my old preferences were recovered and Mozilla works fine.
