Description crusaderky 2006-11-17 06:09:11 UTC
I'm not sure if this can be solved at distro level, or it's a xine bug, or a beryl bug. I'm posting it anyway.

I'm using
xorg-x11 with AIGLX
nVidia FX5600 video card
nvidia-drivers-1.0.9629
beryl-0.1.2
xfce4-4.3.99.2 (4.4 RC2)
xine-ui-0.99.5_pre20060716
xine-lib-1.1.3_pre20061112

xine doesn't start.
$ xine
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.5.
(c) 2000-2004 The xine Team.
xiTK WARNING(_x_error_handler:258): X error received: 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'
X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 20 (X_GetProperty)
Resource id in failed request: 0x1c00013
Serial number of failed request: 42
Current serial number in output stream: 42

Workaround: switch to xfwm4.
Other media players (mplayer, gmplayer, vlc) are unaffected.

It doesn't happen when using beryl with KDE-3.5.
Could someone confirm this bug with the stable version of xfce4 as well?

Did not try stable, but 4.3.90.2 has the same problem...

Can you try beryl without AIGLX because you have nvidia card and you use 9xxx driver so you don't need AIGLX any more - maybe it'll change something...

Check this http://gentoo-wiki.com/Beryl and http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_nVidia_GL_Desktop_Effects

Aye I'd be curious if it happens without aiglx running as the Nvidia cards use their own glx code in the binaries that do the same thing that aiglx will do.

Yes it does, I'm not using AIXGL, only nVidia drivers...

same problem with the nvidia drivers only, without AIGLX.

I don't know if I should post this here, but I have a similar problem by ussing kaffeine (and xine-lib) with beryl enabled.

This doesn't happen to my always, but most times. WHen I start kaffeine I have no tray icon, and window manager is killed (windows without borders, etc..), I can restart WM through beryl 'diamong tray icon' but kaffeine tray icon isn't still there.

To reproduce (if first time doesn't reproduce it close and reopen again):

double click in a video (and have kaffine as default player)
see that WM is killed.
To close definitely kaffeine you need to do a kill -9 <pid> or killall kaffeine command.

This does not happen with beryl using kwin as WM.

Looks like UPSTREAM job to me.
