Description Shaw 2006-11-01 11:00:01 UTC
I recently did an emerge -Du world and afterwards sound does not work well anymore. For instance, I just loaded amarok but it has a problem initializing, so I have to kill it, without it giving me any error information. Here's the error I get from the command line:

aplay 03-brandneu_\(feat_afrob\)_192_lame_cbr.mp3
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:914:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
aplay: main:550: audio open error: File descriptor in bad state

I did not change kernels during the upgrade. Kernel is still vanilla 2.6.18. I'm running an AMD64 X2, but have heard this is also occuring on an intel machine.

(I'm usually running firefox at the same time, and I load it using aoss, if that matters)

Oh yeah, doing an '/etc/init.d/alsasound restart' makes things work for a while.. and then it fails again, maybe after 20 minutes or so.

Using alsa-driver or in-kernel drivers? If the latter, try the first.
