When I play a video carrying an AC-3 sorround audio stream, totem just puts out two channels on my stereo speakers. I use totem with gstreamer and gstreamer with ALSA as default output. When I choose OSS as default output I seem to get all channels mixed down to stereo. I believe this has been fixed upstream, upstream are due to release GStreamer 0.10.10 and gst-plugins-base 0.10.10 very soon now, so please try them when they get in portage (next 2-3 days).

OSS works but ALSA doesn't. I tested to launch it via "gst-launch" and it fails too. mplayer and vlc downmixes to 2ch. for example: http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/fantasticfourriseofthesilversurfer/hd/ there is no speech when the the guy getting married shouts "Jonny" and he should answer "I just bought this tux".
