Well, I think the problem was not autoconf, but m4... but the version of m4 needed by autoconf 2.60.
Reopen if 3.5.4-r1 doesn't work for you.
Did you recently upgrade gcc? I had the same problem and fix_libtool_files.sh 3.4.6-r1 solved it.
