firefox 1.5.0.4 (marked as stable) never seems to hold login status to websites, even with cookies enabled.

Don't restrict bugs without a reason. 

Move your profile away and try again, works just fine here. If it still doesn't work, reopen w/ some sites that don't work,  emerge --info and about:plugins output.
