Description Christophe PEREZ 2006-07-14 23:37:17 UTC
After emerge update, impossible to login with gdm.
First, I was surprised to see that my /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf is not used anymore.
So, I used /usr/share/gdm/defaults.conf, surely not the good way.

This is a ldap client, but all worked well before, and now, I even can login in console, but impossible with gdm.

/var/log/auth.log :
Jul 15 02:20:51 rl gdm(pam_unix)[9878]: session opened for user regine by (uid=0)
Jul 15 02:20:51 rl gdm(pam_unix)[9878]: session closed for user regine

/var/log/syslog :
Jul 15 02:20:51 rl gdm[9878]: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler : erreur X fatale - Red

the output from the postinst states:

einfo "GDM has changed the location of its configuration file. Please"
einfo "edit /etc/X11/gdm/custom.conf. The factory defaults are located"
    einfo "at /usr/share/gdm/{defaults.conf,factory-defaults.conf}"
Comment 3 Christophe PEREZ 2006-07-15 13:32:46 UTC
Ok, i didn't see that because it's a gentoo diskless, and /var/log is in tmpfs, so no emerge log after reboot.
I use custom.conf now, but :
1) it's not used by gdm
2) that doesn't solve my login problem.

I think I will unmerge gdm and emerge kdm that I use on all my PCs, but this one is a diskless gentoo and I didn't want to install all kdelibs just for kdm...

please submit the error in english ( or translate it )
Comment 5 Christophe PEREZ 2006-07-15 14:11:06 UTC
???

gdm doesn't work.
I can't use my login/password, it returns back to login menu (gdm), and never start my session.
I really don't know how to say it differently.
I already gave all what my logs say.

But, nevermind, I'm switching to kdm.

if gdm.conf still exists, it will use that instead of custom.conf
( for backwards compat. )

Did you test by removing your gdm.conf first?

means :
fatal error X - restarting :0

It never used custom.conf or gdm.conf for me. I had both at my last try.
