Remove it.
Comment 2 Christophe Saout 2006-06-21 04:35:15 UTC
I'm well aware that -fvisibility-inlines-hidden can cause problems, but it's not the reason here (dbus doesn't even look at the C++ flags).

I'm wondering how this is supposed to work. expat support is disabled, libxml2 is to be used instead, but dbus-gloader-expat.c references expat symbols?
Comment 3 Christophe Saout 2006-06-22 06:48:32 UTC
Note that this error doesn't occur when building some library, only the when building the tool dbus-viewer from the tools subdirectory.

The reason why it probably compiles for you is that you probably pull in libexpat via libfontconfig or some other library. I tried to kill as much unnecessary libexpat dependencies on my system (and fontconfig 2.3.95 I use also switched to libxml2) so this problem shows up for me.

The solution would probably be to add an explicit -lexpat. They already seem to be doing something like that in dbus-0.62/glib/Makefile.am (just search for -lexpat).

Try this as a workaround:

From https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-448550-postdays-0-postorder-asc-start-200.html
"There is realy easy way to upgrade to new expat without disabling almost complete system set for day or two to rebuild packages depends on it. Before upgrade to 2.0.0 copy libexpat* from /usr/lib/ to /usr/local/lib and make ldconfig. Now upgrade to 2.0.0

Now all packages that use old libexpat would use version from /usr/local/lib, but emerge would use new version from /usr/lib. This way you can still use your system when rebuilding KDE, Gnome, etc. After revdep-rebuild when all packages use new version just delete libexpat from /usr/local/lib and that all."

You may need to "rm /usr/local/lib/libexpat.so.0 && ln -s libexpat.so.050 /usr/local/libexpat.so.0" if lddconfig complains about libexpat.so.0 not being a symlink.
Comment 7 Karol Szumski 2006-09-21 03:49:28 UTC
It looks like the configure script went bonkers, or the guys at dbus didn't think of this possibility. What happens here is that gentoo configures dbus to use libxml2 instead of expat. However, dbus _NEEDS_ expat. Yes, some of the functionality can be achieved by both libxml and expat, but some for whatever reason, CAN'T (like glib bindings which are compiled by default on gentoo). I suggest to add an expat flag to the ebuild that would force building with expat. Just did that myself in my portage overlay and glib compiled like a charm (I used to have the same problems with undefined references). Still doesn't know if it will work though, will post an update later.
Comment 8 Graham Murray 2006-09-21 05:37:43 UTC
(In reply to comment #6)

It cannot be caused by an upgrade to expat as I am seeing this problem on a brand new install of ~x86. The configure finds the symbols in libexpat, but it does not link against libexpat.

I tried to recompile both libxml2 and expat and still get the errors.

This is in the middle of a gcc upgrade, and emerge -eav world. Of course, a ton of other things depend on dbus now won't work until this gets fixed.
Comment 10 Greg Watson (linuxkrn) 2006-09-21 07:26:22 UTC
Found a work around from the forums, compile with USE=-gtk. So as a work around maybe compile with -gtk, then finish system rebuild, and then recompile with gtk support. I'll report back how that works.

That's couse for it to work you need to change the dbus ebuild, remerging other stuff won't help.
What you did was you disabled compilation of the tools that tried to link to libxml2 thinking it was expat. Thus, remerging with gtk flag set will surely fail over and over again unless the ebuild is changed.
But the problem that the dbus requires expat for it's glib bindings remains (This is a problem as these are compiled by default and the ebuild doesn't list expat in DEPEND).
Comment 12 Greg Watson (linuxkrn) 2006-09-21 09:59:24 UTC

It wouldn't matter if dbus listed expat in the DEPEND since portage would only try to merge (if not installed already) expat before it does dbus. So it's the same behavior as if I manually emerge expat before dbus. or emerge expat dbus. If anything, the configure scripts for the dbus scripts need to be modified. My system is still rebuilding from gcc4 upgrade so I haven't been able to verify it doesn't work after a world rebuild.

dbus-0.62-r1.ebuild

This is a updated ebuild with required work done - it adds expat flag, forcing the compilation with expat instead of libxml2 which should remove this bug. It also adds a flag sanity check (won't try to compile if gtk is set and expat is unset)
Comment 14 teidakankan 2006-09-21 14:24:04 UTC
I had this problem and I got around it by using the masked dbus packages and then doing a revdep-rebuild. Haven't had any problems using them. Not a recommendation, just a suggestion.
Comment 15 Doug Goldstein (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-21 15:43:50 UTC
the libxml2 support is going away. It's been on my todo list but I haven't had time. expat-2.x is not stable yet so people that are on stable will have to suffer through a recompile since we won't dep on 2.x, also that's an artifial depend so I won't create that. A while back it was the expat code that sucked and upstream wanted to use libxml2, now they let libxml2 bit rot and want to use expat... Maybe tomorrow it will be back to libxml2, we'll see.
Comment 16 Karol Szumski 2006-09-22 17:22:39 UTC
dbus-0.62 is ~x86 and so is expat-2.0.0 ... why are you worried about people using stable ebuilds? It won't affect them until this dbus version hits stable (then maybye it has, i haven't synced for 3 days or so). Then this "patched" version should be released as unstable ~x86 and flag gtk removed from the stable version of the ebuild.
Comment 17 Doug Goldstein (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-22 20:22:29 UTC
No. Not removing USE flags from a specific ebuild that will screw other stuff up. That's plain pointless and causes extra work and maintanence.

0.62-r1 is in Portage (not the version attached to this bug because that ebuild is also wrong)

Closing as test-request since no one who has this issue has commented on where the -r1 ebuild fixed it for them.
