KDE Laptop power monitor (the KDE battery and power management tray icon) fails to start on KDE startup if, and only if, composite is enabled AND kcompmgr runs. If kcompmgr (or composite) are shut down, everything works properly. Just FYI, if someone is still interested in working on this, on a full reinstall on another machine everything works...
