Description Steve 2006-06-09 05:19:58 UTC
This is my first "bug" entry so I'm a little new at this. I installed Gentoo on a friends machine yesterday. He has a Emachine 3025 that has a NVIDIA chipset and a NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200 Video Card. Here is the issue...

I emerged the mozilla-firefox-bin 1.5, mplayer, and the mplayer plugin. Mplayer will work fine from a terminal

(example - mplayer http://www.site.com/video.mpeg)

but in Firefox if I go to watch any kind of format video, mplayer loads in to 99% and just hangs, I can't even get it to play by forcing it. Now, if I save that video to my desktop, then play it with Mplayer it will play the video but I get the error message..

"failed to open /root/.mplayer/default.sub"

I have googled the hell out of this issue and can't find any fixes on this. I have unemerged and re-emerged firefox, mplayer, and mplayer plugin. Still didnt work. I have tried configuring the mplayer plugin config file every which way I can, nothing works. I have set my "vo" and "ao" in the config files correctly. Do you have any ideas?

Found another issue with this... when I was using mplayer from command line to play a movie I was using and older quicktime video link off a "how to install mplayer" website. When I actually go to put a new trailer in like the new Superman trailer it will not play sound at all but the older quicktime link will.

here is my emerge --info....

HA! another error messages. I took a new trailer link and saved the file to my desktop, played it, and it will play the video and still no sound, but I get this error message...

"cannot find codec audio format 0x6134706D"

I didn't the other error message from before when I played a video from my desktop. just FYI. thanks.

i got some resolution on this issue. Another person having the same issue with the .mplayer/default.sub error message...here is their solution

touch /.mplayer/default.sub

just created the default.sub file and it worked. I don't get that error message anymore. I still however am not gettin any sound from quicktime videos, at least the newer quicktime videos. I'll keep working at it though. Is there anyone actually working on this "bug"? I feel alone.

Alright then! I found out that MPlayer developers know of the quicktime issues and they have released a new version of Mplayer 1.0pre8 and it is to fix the quicktime issues. So...when is Gentoo going to have this available in the portage?

It is available.
