Description Qudsi Nael 2006-05-04 23:25:57 UTC
my 1st Gentoo install, compiled the 2.6.16.-r6 Gentoo-Sources version 2.6.16-r6 (the latest up to this moment) & didn't have any USB functionality!
i've spent 72hours of reading/searching both the net & the WiKi's for a solutions but no avail.
no matter how i compile the Kernel, no matter which USB/HID options i use, no USB functionality at all.

finally, i masked the Gentoo-Sources-2.6.16-r6, & emerged the Gentoo-Sources-2.6.16-r5, without changing ANY HID/USB related options, & voilla! i have the USB functionality back.
& yet to be sure a bit more, i then recompiled the 2.6.16-r6 version with THE SAME OPTIONS as the 2.6.16-r5, & once again the USB support vanished!

symptoms:
when using "lsusb", i only get the following output:
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

now it might be a specific hardware related problem, though i doubt it! :)
anyway, here are the hardware used:

AMD A64 3000+ Socket939 Winie
DFI nF4 Infinity Ultra - using latest BIOS
2x256MB DDR400 2-2-2-5
eVGA GeForce 7300GS 256MB PCIe
WD 80GB SATA - WD8000JS
LiteON x52 CDRW
Logitech Media K/B via PS/2
(*) Logitech MX1000 via USB
(*) Logitech Optical via USB
(*) Sandisk Micro 256MB via USB

thanks in advance,
Nael

can you post:
   - dmesg
   - kernel .config

from both -r5 and -r6 please?

btw, don't post it as a comment, attach the files please.

Closing until info has been provided. This is almost certainly just a simple user error. The *only* change between -r5 and -r6 is a tiny compile fix for a network driver.
